自末次冰期以来一直在用的超保守词汇
Ultraconserved words in use since the last Ice Age

Here's a previous thread from when this was originally posted: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5669179 I remember, because I made two of my most researched comments there [1]. :) I'm no historical linguist, but I'd take this finding with a bunch of grains of salt. Eurasiatic language families that seek to combine, say, Proto-Indo-European [2] and Altaic [3] languages are pretty controversial, and in general this paper reeks a bit of glottochronology [4], which is a pretty controversial topic in historical linguistics itself. Wikipedia's Eurasiatic language page actually even has a large section about this very article, including some refutations[5]. 词源谜团和跨语言巧合可以成为吸引读者的叙事钩子。
要找一个好的词源谜团,很难胜过“dog”。不仅 dog 这个词来源不明,西班牙语和多种斯拉夫语里对应的词也像是凭空出现的。更有趣的是,澳大利亚一种已灭绝的 Aboriginal 语言里也有表示狗的单词,那个词同样读作 dog,而且显然是纯属巧合。

For a good etymological mystery, it's hard to beat "dog." Not only is the word "dog" of unknown origin, its equivalents in Spanish and various Slavic languages also apparently appeared from nowhere. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=dog If that's not fun enough, there's an extinct Aboriginal language from Australia which has a word for dog. That word is also "dog" - apparently pronounced the same as in English, and a complete coincidence: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mbabaram_language
具体词表让“古老词汇”这一抽象论点变得可触可感。
PNAS 论文表1列出的23个词是:thou(汝/你)、I(我)、not(不)、that(那)、we(我们)、to give(给)、who(谁)、this(这)、what(什么)、man/male(男人/男性)、ye(你们)、old(老)、mother(母亲)、to hear(听)、hand(手)、fire(火)、to pull(拉)、black(黑)、to flow(流)、bark(树皮)、ashes(灰)、to spit(吐)、worm(虫)。

词源细节能制造跨时空联想,让说明文字更有趣味。
我最喜欢的例子是“squirrel”:它最初来自古希腊语 σκίουρος,字面意思是“影子尾巴”。想到苏格拉底可能用和我几乎相同的词来指这种动物,这件事很迷人。

My favorite example of this is the word "squirrel," which is originally from ancient Greek, σκίουρος (lexical translation: skiouros, which means shadow-tailed). Somehow the notion that Socrates would use approximately the same (rather unlikely) word for this animal that I do is fascinating.
